Mallaig Through The Lens Ep 37

Writer: Tanya MoxonTanya Moxon

For those who love to learn about our journey and marvel at the views this "Picture This" blog is for you.

In August 21 we spent 16 days in Mallaig. A slightly extended stay to that we first intended as we incurred an engine problem and the parts went the full length of the country and back before arriving. Donkey Express as the locals say! Then to top it off they sent the wrong part, hence 16 days. So as you can imagine I had plenty of time to explore and get a feel for this busy little village.

The harbour is very popular as a crew change destination and it offers fantastic facilities with gas, fuel and a co-op within easy walking distance.

The water in the harbour has 2 seals who come by the boat each morning to say hello. One could often be seen laying on its back snoozing in the sunshine. Cute!

The harbour is home to Mallaig RNLI, a busy fishing fleet, Western Isles and many Cal Mac Ferries. The days sat in the cockpit whilst worshiping the sun were always interesting especially with this amount of port activity.

The views from the circular 4 mile walk around Malliag are so scenic. I cast my eye far and wide with views over to Rum, Eigg, Muck and up the Sounds of Sleet to Skye.

The Jocobite train is a big tourist attraction and worth the short walk to the station to watch it depart.

The people of Mallaig are the making of this bustling fishing village. So eager to help and with such fantastic humour. A special thank you to Chris and Gina at the Marina. Pepe, Joanne and Audrey at the Harbour Authority for the laughs and continious search for an illusive wee banjo bolt.

On the Friday night Audrey invited us to a Ceilidh with her family which was to be the highlight of our stay. We spun around the dance floor for a strip the willow and many other jigs before moving on to the busy and kicking bar next door where the drinks flowed and the laughter continued to the wee small hours. The colourful lights in the harbour wall guided us home that night.

We will be back in Mallaig next year to once again visit our new found friends and of couse stand in the queue at the Bake House. The bakery is outstanding and worth a trip to Mallaig just to taste the venison croissants.

I hope you enjoyed our view of Mallaig. Until the next time when we will share our trip to Loch Spleve and Airds Bay, take care and enjoy life.

Fearless Inspiration

Dance is the joy of movement and the heart of life. Embrace life through your feet, by a shuffle or a jig. It simply doesnt matter which as long as you have fun at the gig.
